Behind the Scenes: Making a DIY Kite for a Family Story Session

Why I wanted to Make a Kite for this Session

I’m always inspired by other photographers- And I’ve been seeing a couple come through my feed that have some handmade fabric kites… So, for my session with a Mama and her two kiddos in a field, I thought this would be the perfect session to try out making a DIY kite.

I waited until Sunday after church to get my supplies (for my session that afternoon)- and the best fabric store Hobby Lobby is closed on Sunday. I went to 2 different Michaels to find my supplies.

I found some beige/ white stripe fabric and some lace trim and some red ribbon for a pop of holiday magic. I got 2 skinny dowel rods and some string. I already had a hot glue gun, so I got home and knocked this thing out in 45 mins or less.

I followed this blog for the steps.

Check out these photos from my session!

Why I love incorporating Handmade Props

Adding handmade props can add a personal touch + depth to story telling. Whether its paper airplanes, paper snowflakes, paper boats or kites, it can help tell a story in a unique way without distracting from the overall aesthetic.

Tips for Using Props in Family Sessions

When using props, I think, will this match my aesthetic? my color scheme? the story I’m trying to tell? and make beautiful photos?

I don’t want to add pressure to families to have these things on hand, so I’ll make some things or ask my kids to help me make some things to have on hand when I arrive.

I premake some to bring, and depending on what it is, I’ll bring extra to capture the family actually making the paper airplane or cutting the snowflake- Just in case they don’t want to make the thing or can’t or the air plane doesn’t fly, etc.

This encourages creativity and family play.
